For a while now I’ve thought about starting a blog series on leadership or maybe writing a book. I’ve always hesitated because I wasn’t sure if my own leadership ideas would be seen as either original or innovative. Those thoughts have held me back out of some fear that people won’t find what I share valuable or worse, I get fiercely criticized and/or mocked. Recently, I was encouraged and inspired to just get started and share my wisdom with the world by one of my co-workers, Amit Singh. So come join me as I take this leap of faith and we can go on this journey together!
Amit knows that one of my career and life goals is to inspire people, with a focus on inspiring them to be successful. My most aspirational key result to measure success in achieving this goal is to one day give a TED talk. Amit encouraged me to share my thoughts on leadership, he suggested rather than focusing on new ideas or theories just make it practical, applicable, and bite sized resulting in lessons that are both useful and inspirational. He reminded me that I have plenty of experience and a lot of success and failure stories to share.
I want to keep focus on his points about making the advice practical and applicable. My plan for Lerner’s Lessons on Leadership is to share ideas and stories from my personal experiences, training and conferences I attended, books and articles I’ve read, as well as the talks and podcasts I’ve listened to while studying leadership. I will draw from the ideas and philosophies of my personal inspirational sources, such as Simon Sinek, Adam Grant, Ken Blanchard, John Doerr, as well as my mentors and past managers who have all influenced my leadership style.
I’m glad you read this far and I see it as my job to give you reasons to stick around and finish the introductory entry to my blog. The question you should be asking yourself right now is “Why is Lerner qualified to give lessons on leadership?” That’s a question I asked myself when I sat down to write this. For starters I’ve been a formal people leader for over a decade now. I started by leading 10 people and have grown to leading a roughly 700 person global organization today. Across that time I’ve learned a lot about leadership, I’ve had my successes and failures. More importantly, I’ve helped many people achieve success in their own careers. With all of this, I learned a lot and want to share what I found worked for me and help others, including you, be successful in their leadership careers. You can read more about me in About the Author.
So what will this blog, Lerner’s Lessons on Leadership cover? Here are some topics I have in mind, in no particular order:
- Being a successful leader
- Learn from your team
- Measuring success
- Ask questions, don’t give answers
- Listen to your team
- I don’t know the answer
- Coaching and mentoring
- Difficult conversations
- Asking for help
- Trust
- Clarity
- Learn from failures (discuss what isn’t going well or didn’t go well)
- Focus on the journey
- Tell people where they stand
I hope you will come back and read future posts and add to the discussion in the comments.
Thanks for the call out Scott! I must say… 'well begun is half done'. Look forward to reading the series.
I'm really proud to call you my brother. Putting yourself out there is not easy. I love how vulnerable you are in the opening. I also am excited to get to know a different side of you through this series. Perhaps you will do for my leadership, what you did for my sports as a kid. Teach me how to play, so I can surpass you! Just kidding, you are still the better ice hockey player and in tennis I'm not even close.
Scott well done. I appreciate the way you have commenced with your 1st blog.
I'll be eager to read your blogs too. The best part I admire is the name of Amit you have mentioned. This is where the leadership in reality starts…
Thanks little brother! If I help make you a better leader, even if it is one better than me then I will be happy. I will be happy if anyone finds this blog useful and it improves their leadership.
Thanks Rakesh, the support is truly appreciated! More to come soon, I promise!
Glad you took the leap of faith. I'm looking forward to following along as you explore this new medium and continue on your leadership journey inspiring others and sharing your experiences.
Thank you for the kind words of support.
I wish I knew who wrote this. Apparently there is a profile bug in blogger, you can fix it by visiting https://www.blogger.com/switch-profile.g
